Thank you for 2022!
2022: A turbulent year in the world with conflicts, rising costs of living, increasing poverty and hunger. Inequality in the world, and in Sweden, has increased, and climate disasters continue to hit communities hard.
But it has also been a year where people have repeatedly mobilised and raised their voices for each other. A year in which people have tirelessly shown their solidarity for those most at risk - again and again.
With your support, we have been able to continue fighting injustice and oppression, and working for an equal future. For that, you deserve a big thank you. Below are some highlights from our work in 2022.
Watch a film summarising the year 2022
Focus on inequality
2022 was a year of growing global inequality, and the consequences have been enormous. In January, we showed that one person dies every four seconds because of inequality. In May, we reported that billionaires in the pharmaceutical, food and energy industries made huge profits during the pandemic - the wealth of the world's billionaires increased more in those two years than they had in the 23 years before. This at a time when extreme poverty has increased more than in 20 years, and when ordinary people have been hit hard by rising food and electricity prices. We wrote an opinion piece about this in Aftonbladet.
The global food crisis is something we have all felt. Rising prices have forced many to make tough decisions when shopping, and those who are already poor have been hit very hard. In September, we revealed that it's not a food shortage (on the contrary - there's enough food to feed the entire world population several times over!), but rather that it's our global food system that's at fault. Read more about the myths surrounding the food crisis here.
In October, we released our Global Inequality Index, which showed that the world's countries have generally failed to tackle inequality during the pandemic, but also that Sweden, which had previously been at the top, has fallen several places. Sweden is now the worst in the Nordic countries at tackling inequality. This was reported in Svenska Dagbladet, where the then Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson commented on the situation.
Climate change
During the year, the climate crisis has continued to be present, hitting those who are already most vulnerable and poor hardest. We saw this not least with the floods in Pakistan over the summer, and the drought in East Africa that contributed to the worst hunger crisis in living memory.
At the UN climate summit, COP27, in Egypt, we highlighted the fact that the climate crisis is unequal: in 2 hours, a billionaire emits as much carbon dioxide as a person from the poorest 50% of the world's population does in 1 year.
We have also called on the current government to stand by its promise of climate finance for the countries hardest hit, and to introduce a special tax on income generated by fossil fuel-intensive industries.
Corporate responsibility
In the spring, we released our report "The Workers Behind the Citrus Fruits", an investigative report into Coop's Moroccan citrus supply chain, which showed that workers were most likely subjected to forced labour, sexual harassment, low wages and unreasonably long working hours. Read the TT article on the report here.
During the year, we have also been engaged in the pending EU legislation to ensure that companies in the EU market are legally responsible for human rights and the environment throughout their operations. This is a very important issue for us at Oxfam, as human rights are violated on a daily basis by companies' activities - and legislation would create a level playing field for all companies, which also benefits competitiveness. Read more about the work on EU legislation here.
On the ground in disasters and crises
Oxfam is on the ground and works in 87 countries. Here are examples of three of our major efforts:
East Africa
Due to extreme drought and conflict, millions of people in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and South Sudan are facing acute hunger. Every 36 seconds someone dies, and more than 45 million people are in need of humanitarian aid.
Thanks to your support, Oxfam expects to reach over 1.5 million people with emergency food, clean water, hygiene kits, cash assistance, shelter and a roof over their heads.
Pakistan
After heavy monsoon rains, millions of people in Pakistan are struggling to survive the floods that have hit the country.
With your help, Oxfam has been able to help people with hygiene kits, shelter, shelter and financial support. Together with our partners in Pakistan, we have reached over 21,000 people so far.
Ukraine
Since the war broke out in the country, Oxfam has been on the ground in neighbouring countries to help those fleeing. The need for shelter, food and clean water is great.
With your help, Oxfam has been able to reach over 600,000 people in Ukraine, Poland, Romania and Moldova. We distribute hygiene kits, provide clean water, food, and shelter. We also carry out targeted protection activities for particularly vulnerable groups, such as minorities.
What else?
Ahead of the parliamentary elections, we were one of nearly 60 organisations that ran the "Save Aid" campaign - a call for the incoming government to maintain the 1% target for aid. Over 20,000 people signed the appeal, which was delivered to the various parties. Unfortunately, we fell short and aid will be cut, which we criticised in a joint opinion piece with Oxfam in the UK.
Read more about the appeal on the CONCORD website.
In November, we launched "The Food That Shortens Life", a campaign that sheds light on the working conditions that farmers and workers around the world endure so that we in Sweden can eat avocados, oranges and bananas. For example.

To all of you who support Oxfam, we say thank you.
It's thanks to our donors, and you who support us in other ways, that we can help millions of people affected by disasters, do informed research on climate and inequality, and put pressure on our world leaders to take responsibility for the world's injustices! Together, we fight for an equal future. Many thanks.
