Global warming can still be stopped - if we act now!
Higher temperatures and increased global warming will displace people and push millions into poverty.
Today, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a report outlining how global warming can be prevented from exceeding 1.5 degrees.
"Climate change has set our planet on fire, millions of people are already feeling the consequences and the IPCC only shows that it could get much worse. The sooner governments embrace the renewable energy revolution and act to protect communities at risk, the more lives will be spared."
Raijeli Nicole, Oxfam Pacific Regional Director
"Even at 1.1 degrees of warming, we are seeing the start of a huge refugee influx and a shocking increase in hunger, with women living in poverty suffering the most. It only gets worse from here. If we settle for two degrees, whole communities will be forced to flee and tens, if not hundreds of thousands more will end up in poverty."
Raijeli Nicole, Oxfam Pacific Regional Director
Doing nothing more and simply following the commitments made in the Paris Agreement condemns the world to a 3 degree warming. It would do permanent damage to our planet and to humanity.
However, none of this is inevitable. What is hopeful is that some of the poorest and lowest emitting countries are now leading the fight for the climate. It is now up to rich countries to follow.
But time is running out. There is still a chance to stop warming at 1.5 degrees. The solutions are there and the focus must be on ending the use of fossil fuels and stopping new coal-fired power plants.
