People in Yemen fighting for survival

Both food and water are in short supply in Yemen after the now three-year war, and shocking increases in food prices in the country have added to the suffering.

Since the war started, food prices have skyrocketed. The price of rice has risen by 131%, beans by 92%, vegetable oil by 86% and flour by 54%. During the same period, hunger has increased by 68% and almost 18 million people in Yemen are now suffering from hunger.

Over three million people have been forced to flee their homes, over 5,500 civilians have been killed and another 2,000 have died from cholera in a country where half of all health clinics are no longer functioning, due to the conflict.

"The country is teetering on the brink of starvation. Families are facing a daily struggle just to get hold of essentials like water and food," said Colette Fearon, Deputy Humanitarian Director at Oxfam.

Since July 2015, Oxfam has reached over 2.8 million people in nine provinces of Yemen with water, sanitation, cash grants and food vouchers. In our work against the spread of cholera, we have reached 430,000 people.

22 million people in the country are in need of assistance and nearly one million people have been infected with suspected cholera in the largest outbreak ever recorded. This makes Yemen the world's worst humanitarian disaster.
