Reacting to today's announcement of the Israeli government's decision to take direct military control of Gaza City, Bushra Khalidi, Oxfam's policy officer in Palestine and Israel, said:
"This decision marks a dangerous escalation of the ongoing illegal occupation of Palestinian territory, a brazen annihilation carried out in full view of the world and in open defiance of the UN General Assembly's call to end the occupation. It signals a clear intent to consolidate Israeli control over Gaza rather than to end this genocide."
Bushra Khalidi, Policy Officer for Oxfam in Palestine and Israel
"Two million Palestinians have been forced to endure starvation, bombings and the systematic deprivation of their rights. Displacing them now would deepen an already devastating pattern of destruction and suffering."
Bushra Khalidi, Policy Officer for Oxfam in Palestine and Israel
" For humanitarian organizations like ours, this decision reinforces an already impossible operational environment. Recent reports of plans to hold civilians in tightly controlled camps are deeply alarming and evoke some of the darkest chapters in modern history. If this were to lead to the forced evacuation of Gaza City, it would have catastrophic consequences for our ability to deliver aid, and for our staff, the vast majority of whom live and work in the city."
Bushra Khalidi, Policy Officer for Oxfam in Palestine and Israel
"Up to one million people are estimated to still be in Gaza City. Any attempt to forcibly remove them would constitute one of the largest and most dangerous evacuations to date, and would be utterly disastrous."
Bushra Khalidi, Policy Officer for Oxfam in Palestine and Israel
"Every powerful nation must act, using all diplomatic, legal and economic tools at its disposal, to stop this atrocity. History will not look kindly on those who chose silence in the face of Gaza's annihilation."
