15 maj 2025, öppet brevet till Sveriges regering

Ulf Kristersson, Sweden can no longer just watch: act for the people and international law in Gaza

This is not only morally reprehensible but also a violation of international law.

De brott som begicks mot civila i Israel den 7 oktober 2023 av Hamas och andra väpnade grupper är oförsvarbara: Oxfam fördömer alla attacker mot oskyldiga civila.

But nothing justifies Israel's violations of international law and widespread violence against civilians in Gaza. Gaza is on the brink of total humanitarian collapse and in early 2024 the International Court of Justice confirmed that Israel's actions may amount to genocide. This also obliges Sweden to act.

Representanter för Sveriges regering har flertal gånger uttryckt förfäran över förhållandena i Gaza. Nu rinner tiden ut för människorna i Gaza.

As fellow human beings, we cannot continue to watch. That is why we turn to you, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

Sverige har både en juridisk skyldighet och en moralisk skyldighet att agera kraftfullt för folkrätten och människorna i Gaza.

We call on the Swedish government to act - before it is too late:

  • Demand an immediate and permanent ceasefire

  • Acting for a safe and unrestricted access to humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza - demand an immediate end to the blockade

  • Resuming Swedish aid to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, UNRWA

  • Take economic measures economic measures against Israel - stop EU trade agreement with Israel

Questions & answers

In just over a week, over 50,000 people took action for the people of Gaza by signing our appeal to the Swedish Prime Minister and Government. It feels hopeful that so many people are raising their voices! As we plan to hand over the signatures no later than June 11th and see the public's enormous engagement, we raised the target to 70,000 on May 27. We believe that our message carries more weight the more we are.

Despite unimaginable suffering, Oxfam and our partners continue to make a difference for Palestinians in Gaza. We are doing everything we can to provide life-saving aid in the midst of a near-total siege, but at a fraction of the scale we could achieve if humanitarian access were opened up.

Our colleagues in Gaza are working non-stop to support those facing starvation, bombings, mass displacement and the collapse of essential supplies such as access to clean drinking water.

Oxfam's supplies in Gaza have been drastically reduced. On 20 April, Oxfam partners distributed their last food parcel in Gaza, but we continue to deliver clean water, offer emergency cash assistance, support small-scale food production, provide some sanitation support and prevent gender-based violence .

We also offer professional psychosocial support, especially for children who are deeply traumatized by the horrors they endured. This includes recreational activities to help restore some sense of normalcy.

The more people who sign, the stronger our message will be. We will send the petition to Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on June 11. We will also ask for a meeting to present our demands.

When the letter is handed over, the number of signednat. In addition, the name of the Secretary General of Oxfam will be visible, together with the names of some will be visible, no personal data of other signatories will be visible.

After 11 June, the petition will remain on Oxfam Sweden's online channels to continue mobilizing engagement. If the number of signatures continues to increase, a new submission to the Prime Minister will be made, showing that even more people are getting involved.

States have a responsibility to act to to prevent genocide according to international law. All states must take diplomatic, economic and political political measures that they have power to do to to prevent genocide i Gaza. This can can be done by encouraging encouraging to that the blockade be lifted, demand a ceasefire, ensure access for humanitarian assistance, to cease with trade or specifically with tradel of war material if there there is a risk that these used i acts of genocide, or other crimes against international law. Oxfam believes that a ceasefire is necessary in order to to protect the civilians i Gaza.

The food shortage is severe i Gaza and no humanitarian supplies such as food are coming into i Gaza since March 2. The people i Gaza are living i starvation-like conditions and the number of starving is expected to to increase. I the present has not THE UN formally categorized situation as a famine disasterbut the situation is very allvaried.

Both UNRWA and World Food Programme rapcarries to that mytsupplies are outtemptied. Humanitary organizations som Oxfam and andra otherpcarries to that hungern increasear toll companionof by Israeli attacks and blockad of Gaza. Oxfam delade out sitt sista matpackage i Gaza on 20 April 2025 - now is forrcouncils tomma.

This means that means that that the humanitarian system no longer no longer can no longer function and deliver the assistance that will alleviate suffering and save lives. For example. means it means that humanitarian actors such as Oxfam and others do not have access to, or the ability to share distribute food, medicines or other life-saving supplies that are needed for to maintain the humanitarian mission.

Oxfam is on the ground in many countries, and the degree of need determines the response. The decision to bein a crisis is always made on the basis of humanitarian need.. Before the October 7th attacks, 80% of the people in Gaza were dependent on international aid.t support as a result of a 16-year blockade. The Israeli government, local and national organizations have sufficient capacity to meet the needs of its population, which Gaza does not have. Should the situation change Oxfam will review prioritization.

Attacks that deliberately target civilians are never justified. All parties must respect international humanitarian law and stop the violence. Hostage-taking violates humanitarian law and Oxfam condemns all such acts. Oxfam calls for the unconditional release of all hostages and illegally detained Palestinian prisoners

Oxfam has been operating in Gaza and Israel since the 1950s. Therer works Oxfam works with local partners to support people in Gaza affected by the humanitarian crisis there. We are providing clean water, rebuilding damaged water systems and improving sanitation. We support local farmers to improve the quality of their products and get them sold, and we support civil society to fight for the human rights of the people. We campaign for sustainable peace and security for all civilians and an end to the blockade of Gaza.
