Rafah ground invasion cannot be allowed - EU must stop delaying

6 May 2024

Commenting on Israel's imminent invasion of Rafah, Sally Abi-Khalil, Oxfam's Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, said:

"We are appalled by Israel's evacuation order of 100,000 people and what looks like an imminent invasion of Rafah, despite a universal appeal by world leaders and governments to Israel to stop its continued and inhumane assault"

"The fear in Rafah is palpable as people who have already been forced to flee across Gaza several times now have to move again."

Sally Abi-Khalil, Regional Director Oxfam Middle East and North Africa

"With Israel now blocking humanitarian aid, fuel and other goods from entering Gaza through the two critical crossings at Rafah and Kerem Shalom, humanitarian life-saving operations will become even more difficult."

" For over six months, Israel has deliberately and systematically targeted civilians and humanitarian workers even in the designated "safe zones" and "evacuation routes". Any claims they now make that civilians can be safely evacuated have lost all credibility. The so-called humanitarian safe zone in Al-Mawasi that people are being told to flee to has already been attacked twice."

Sally Abi-Khalil, Regional Director Oxfam Middle East and North Africa

"It is incomprehensible that a government is allowed to ignore all warnings of the catastrophic humanitarian cost with complete impunity, and at the same time allowed to continue its rampage while appallingly ignoring human life, international law and the ICJ's call to prevent genocide."

Sally Abi-Khalil, Regional Director Oxfam Middle East and North Africa

"This land invasion cannot be allowed. With its billions of dollars in assets and direct arms sales, powerful countries have essentially given Israel a free hand to commit war crimes. EU leaders must stop procrastinating. They must immediately stop selling arms to Israel, suspend the EU-Israel agreement and call even more strongly for an immediate ceasefire."
