Perhaps the strongest mother in the world

26 May 2024

Today we celebrate Mother's Day, a tribute to all mothers around the world. Every day, we meet amazing mothers in our projects who are helping both their families and the communities they live in. One of them is Asha Vicky - perhaps the strongest mother in the world.

Asha fled conflict and food shortages in South Sudan and now lives in Imvepi refugee camp in Uganda with her two children. To support her children, Adhel and Apuk, she has started a small business selling vegetables and spices with the help of Oxfam. Every day at 6am she is out on her farm and then goes to the market to sell the crops to other refugees living in the camp. At the same time, she also finds energy to play with the children.

"I try to be strong, but I think a lot about our situation - it's tough."

Vicky is involved in a project where Oxfam works with local organizations to support refugees on issues of peace, food and economic security, and education. An important issue is that the refugees are supported to lead the community they live in.

It is thanks to our monthly donors that we are able to support mothers like Asha Vicky to rebuild their lives despite war and conflict. For that we say a big thank you. For an equal future.
