May 2023, letter to the Swedish Minister for Development Cooperation:
Johan Forssell, take action to alleviate the ongoing hunger crisis in East Africa!
We call on the Minister for Development to act decisively to support the people of East Africa, many of them women and children, who are experiencing the world's biggest humanitarian crisis. Oxfam estimates that two people die every minute in East Africa due to hunger, exacerbated by the climate crisis which has brought extreme weather in the form of droughts and floods. 28 million people - in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and South Sudan - more than the entire population of the North are living in extreme hunger.
Act now - don't wait for the crisis to be defined as a famine. Acting too late risks the death of hundreds of thousands of people. An entire generation risks living with the long-term consequences of malnutrition, stunted growth, disease, and lack of education.
The crisis is not new, it has been going on for three years - and now it is time for Sweden and other donor countries to act.
We therefore call on Sweden to act by
-
immediately provide increased humanitarian support to address the hunger crisis;
-
provide increased and long-term assistance to the people of the region to prevent and adapt to climate change and thus prevent future crises;
-
live up to Sweden's climate promises and take your responsibility to reduce Swedish greenhouse gas emissions and prevent people in poverty and vulnerability from being affected.
